Not all hydrogen is created equal — in fact, it comes in many colours, depending on how it’s produced.

  • Grey Hydrogen is made from natural gas and releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

  • Blue Hydrogen also uses fossil fuels but captures most of the CO₂ before it escapes.

  • Pink or Purple Hydrogen comes from nuclear power, using heat or electricity from reactors.

  • Green Hydrogen, on the other hand, is made from renewable energy and water, producing no emissions at all.

These colours aren’t about what the gas looks like — hydrogen itself is always invisible — but they help identify the carbon footprint of each type.

The goal worldwide is to move from grey and blue to green, where the energy is completely clean and renewable. That’s the hydrogen revolution in a nutshell — same element, new possibilities.
