Namibia is set to become a major player in the global green energy landscape as China National Chemical Engineering & Construction Corporation Seven (CC7), a subsidiary of the state-owned China National Chemical Engineering Company, has signed Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contracts with Hyphen Hydrogen Energy. The project, valued at approximately $10 billion, aims to develop the world’s largest green ammonia facility powered by 3 GW of renewable energy.
The plant will produce up to 2.4 million tonnes of green ammonia annually and forms a central component of Namibia’s national green hydrogen strategy. Hyphen Hydrogen Energy – a joint venture between Germany’s Enertrag and UK-based Nicholas Holdings – is leading the initiative, with Namibia acquiring a 24% equity stake in the project in late 2024.
The contract signing underscores the strategic cooperation between the two firms. CC7, known for its expertise in petrochemical and energy infrastructure, will spearhead the technical design and construction of the plant.
Namibian authorities have emphasised the transformative potential of the project, both economically and environmentally. The investment is nearly equivalent to the country’s GDP and is expected to drive export revenues, industrial growth, and long-term energy independence.
The agreement represents a major milestone in Africa’s energy transition and strengthens China’s role in global green hydrogen deployment.
