Engineers India Limited (EIL), a Navratna public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, has awarded a Research and Development (R&D) order to Greenzo Energy Limited for the supply and installation of a hydrogen electrolyser modular unit. The order was issued following a detailed technical evaluation process, reflecting the growing emphasis on strengthening domestic capabilities in clean energy technologies.
The agreement was formalised through a Letter of Intent (LoI) and a purchase order issued on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) platform. Under the terms of the order, Greenzo Energy will be responsible for supplying the modular electrolyser unit, ensuring its site installation, and providing the necessary spare parts to support long-term operation. The unit will be installed at EIL’s R&D complex in Sector 16, Gurgaon, Haryana.
Hydrogen electrolysers, which split water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity, are seen as critical technologies in India’s transition towards clean fuels. Their development is central to the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position India as a global hub for the production, use, and export of green hydrogen. With demand for low-carbon fuels expected to rise in both domestic and international markets, projects such as this are being viewed as stepping stones towards wider deployment of indigenous hydrogen solutions.
By awarding the order to a domestic company, EIL is contributing to the government’s goal of fostering innovation within India’s clean energy sector. Industry experts suggest that such initiatives will not only help reduce the country’s dependence on imported technologies but also enable the creation of supply chains that are aligned with local requirements. Building capacity in R&D and manufacturing is expected to be particularly important as India targets large-scale deployment of green hydrogen by 2030 and aims for 5 million tonnes of annual production capacity.
The collaboration also highlights the role of public-private partnerships in driving technological advancement. Public sector enterprises such as EIL bring established infrastructure, experience, and resources, while private players contribute flexibility and innovation in emerging technology areas. Together, these partnerships are viewed as a practical way to accelerate progress in the development and commercialisation of green hydrogen technologies.
The installation of the electrolyser at EIL’s Gurgaon facility will serve as a demonstration project that can provide insights into the performance, scalability, and operational requirements of such units in real-world conditions. Data and experience gathered through the initiative could guide future deployments and support the optimisation of electrolyser technology for Indian conditions.
As India advances its clean energy transition, the emphasis on indigenous technology development and R&D is becoming increasingly prominent. The order placed by EIL with Greenzo Energy is one of several initiatives underway across the country that reflect this shift. It is expected to contribute to the knowledge base, infrastructure, and industrial capacity needed for India to achieve its long-term green hydrogen goals.
