L&T Energy Greentech, the green molecules arm of Larsen & Toubro, is preparing to establish a 1.8 million tonne-per-annum (mtpa) green ammonia facility at Paradip port in Odisha, building on its earlier project at Kandla port, CEO Mr. Derek M. Shah announced in a Moneycontrol interview.
The project is expected to require investment comparable to Kandla—between ₹35,000 crore and ₹40,000 crore—and will be executed in multiple phases over the next five to six years. L&T already commissioned India’s first megawatt-scale green hydrogen plant at Deendayal Port Authority and has won the tender for a large green hydrogen facility at IOCL’s Panipat refinery.
Shah explained that Paradip was chosen for its access to emerging green shipping corridors, linking ports like Singapore and Rotterdam, and anticipated stricter emissions regulations for maritime transport.
L&T’s approach spans three strategically aligned areas: manufacturing electrolysers and fuel cells, EPC services and developing its own green hydrogen and ammonia plants. The Paradip project builds on this integrated green value chain strategy.
