NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd has set a new record in India’s green ammonia market by securing a supply contract at the lowest ever bid of ₹51.80 per kg ($0.59/kg or ₹59,125/tonne approx.) in the country’s second green ammonia auction. Conducted by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) under the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s SIGHT Scheme (Mode-2A, Tranche-I), this auction marks a significant milestone in India’s transition to clean fuels.

The contract awards NTPC Renewable Energy the right to supply 70,000 metric tonnes per annum of green ammonia for ten years to Krishana Phoschem Ltd, located in Meghnagar, Madhya Pradesh. SECI confirmed that NTPC’s winning bid represents the lowest price seen across all green ammonia tenders conducted so far in the country.

This development closely follows ACME Cleantech Solutions’ win in the previous auction with a bid of ₹55.75/kg. Both auctions are part of the government’s strategy to scale up green hydrogen and ammonia production, enabling India’s decarbonisation and clean energy goals through competitive price discovery.

The falling tariff trend reflects growing competitiveness among bidders and a maturing green hydrogen market. The back-to-back auctions indicate rising confidence in the sector, especially among public sector undertakings like NTPC, which are taking an active lead in shaping India’s hydrogen economy.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission targets the production of 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen per year by 2030, with derivatives like ammonia playing a key role in industrial decarbonisation, particularly in the fertiliser sector. SECI continues to serve as the nodal agency for implementing these auctions and has lined up several more tranches to facilitate the roll-out of green hydrogen projects across the country.

NTPC’s aggressive bid positions it as a key player in India’s clean energy future, reflecting a strong push from the public sector to drive down costs and accelerate the shift from fossil-based inputs to renewable hydrogen and its derivatives.
