Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the commissioning of India’s first indigenous green hydrogen plant in the port sector, officially inaugurated at Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla, Gujarat. In a post on X, DPA celebrated the milestone: “Fuelling Progress with Green Innovation! Deendayal Port Authority, Kandla proudly commissions India’s 1st Make-in-India Green Hydrogen Plant in the port sector … a powerful stride towards the Net Zero vision of our Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi.” Responding to the announcement, PM Modi remarked, “This is a commendable effort, championing sustainability and powering our Net-Zero vision.”

The battery-backed 1 MW green hydrogen module was commissioned within just four months of Prime Minister Modi laying the foundation stone for a larger 10 MW hydrogen facility at Bhuj in May 2025. With this achievement, Kandla becomes the first port in India to house a megawatt-scale, domestically engineered hydrogen system, underlining Gujarat’s growing leadership in renewable energy and sustainable logistics infrastructure.

The plant was officially inaugurated on 31 July by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, in the presence of Minister of State Shantanu Thakur, Ministry Secretary T. K. Ramachandran, DPA Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh, and other senior officials. During the ceremony, Sonowal praised DPA’s “remarkable speed and precision,” noting that completing the first 1 MW module in just four months sets a new benchmark for green hydrogen deployment in India. Government officials highlighted the plant’s broader significance for reducing carbon emissions and advancing clean energy applications across India’s maritime and logistics sectors. The project aligns closely with the national strategy to enhance homegrown green technology and supports India’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.

Industry experts say the Kandla initiative exemplifies the country’s strategic shift toward sustainable infrastructure development and underscores the importance of green hydrogen in decarbonising hard-to-electrify sectors. The project is expected to serve as a model for other major ports across India to follow, setting in motion a scalable roadmap for low-carbon maritime operations and supporting the government’s goal of a self-reliant clean energy future.
