Thermax has signed an exclusive agreement with Norway’s HydrogenPro to manufacture, supply and install alkaline electrolyser systems in India, marking a significant step in expanding the country’s green hydrogen manufacturing capabilities.

Under the deal, HydrogenPro will license its alkaline technology to Thermax, supply its current and future electrolyser stacks and provide ongoing technical support. Thermax will hold exclusive rights in India to supply, install, commission and service HydrogenPro-based systems, with plans to begin operations immediately.

As part of the technology transfer, Thermax will design and build system components locally, which will be integrated with HydrogenPro’s stacks. The two companies will also explore the development of joint systems to meet future demand. The partnership’s first milestone will be the establishment of a state-of-the-art short-stack test station at Thermax’s Pune facility.

The agreement reflects a growing trend of electrolyser manufacturers pursuing low-capex expansion strategies by licensing technology in high-growth markets. For HydrogenPro, it offers what CEO Jarle Dragvik described as “an important entry” into India and a “solid market foothold.” He emphasised the technology’s potential to decarbonise industrial sectors with limited renewable alternatives.

Mr. Ashish Bhandari, Managing Director and CEO of Thermax, said the collaboration would enable the company to “immediately offer market-ready alkaline technology-based solutions for deployment across industries in India”.

This marks Thermax’s second electrolyser licence deal. Last year, it entered into a non-exclusive agreement with Ceres to bring solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC) technology to India.
