Avaada Group has announced that it has entered into an initial agreement with GRIDCO and IIT-Bhubaneswar to create a dedicated Centre of Excellence for the green hydrogen sector in Odisha. The collaboration reflects a growing push to build scientific and industrial capability in green hydrogen as India accelerates its clean-energy transition. According to the company, the proposed Centre aims to become a focal point for innovation, research and practical deployment of hydrogen technologies.

The Centre of Excellence will serve as a platform for conducting advanced studies on the use of green hydrogen across multiple applications. These include energy storage, industrial processes and mobility solutions, all of which are considered central to future decarbonisation pathways. By concentrating on these areas, the Centre aims to support the development of technologies that can integrate hydrogen into mainstream energy systems, improve efficiency and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Focus on research and techno-economic evaluation

A key mandate of the Centre will be to evaluate the techno-economic viability of emerging hydrogen technologies. This involves assessing costs, performance parameters, long-term operational feasibility and suitability for large-scale deployment. Such evaluations are crucial for determining which hydrogen technologies can be commercially competitive and how they may be adapted to India’s specific energy and industrial landscape.

The partnership brings together complementary strengths. Avaada contributes industry expertise and a large renewable-energy footprint, GRIDCO provides institutional support and sectoral coordination, and IIT-Bhubaneswar adds academic rigour and research capability. Their combined efforts are expected to create a strong ecosystem for hydrogen innovation in Odisha, helping the State position itself as a leader in emerging clean-energy technologies.

The announcement signals not only the rising momentum behind green hydrogen in India, but also the increasing need for dedicated research institutions that can guide technology development and sectoral adoption. If executed effectively, the new Centre of Excellence could support breakthroughs in hydrogen storage, mobility and industrial use, providing a foundation for long-term growth in the sector.
