Spain’s green hydrogen ambitions have taken a major leap forward with Iberdrola announcing the successful launch of the 100 MW Puertollano green hydrogen plant. The development strengthens the country’s aim to position itself as a regional and potentially global leader in green hydrogen. The sector is expanding rapidly worldwide and Spain is now signalling its intention to compete at scale with pioneering projects backed by its strongest renewable-energy players.
Iberdrola noted that the commissioning of the Puertollano plant comes as the company continues to consolidate its position as a global market leader in renewable-energy solutions. With more than a century of operations in the energy sector, Iberdrola is recognised as one of the largest energy companies globally by market capitalisation. The new facility further reinforces its strategic push into green hydrogen as an industrial decarbonisation tool.
Among world’s largest electrolytic hydrogen production systems
The Puertollano plant is equipped with a 100 MW photovoltaic solar system and a lithium-ion battery system offering 20 MWh of storage. This robust renewable-energy infrastructure makes the installation one of the largest electrolytic hydrogen production systems in the world that relies entirely on renewable power. The facility has earned recognition for its engineering scale and efficiency and has already won awards for its contribution to the green hydrogen landscape.
The plant boasts a production capacity exceeding 200,000 tonnes per year which places it among the most efficient facilities in the European Union. The green hydrogen generated will be supplied to Fertiberia’s ammonia plant located nearby. This supply will support decarbonisation within Spain’s industrial sector and strengthen the wider renewable-energy market as demand for clean hydrogen accelerates.
Located close to Spain’s National Hydrogen Centre the facility is strategically positioned to advance national research innovation and commercial deployment of hydrogen technologies. Its commissioning marks a significant step in Spain’s broader hydrogen strategy which aims to integrate large-scale renewable-powered hydrogen into industrial operations over the coming years.
