KPI Green Energy, part of the KP Group, has announced that it has received three Notifications of Award totalling about ₹128.49 crore from NTPC for the development of a plasma gasification-based green hydrogen generation project at the NETRA facility in Greater Noida. This marks KPI Green Energy’s entry into the green hydrogen sector and represents one of the early deployments of plasma gasification-based hydrogen generation technology in the country.
Under the awarded project, KPI Green Energy will develop a plant designed to produce one tonne of green hydrogen per day using plasma-induced radiant energy gasification. This advanced system converts municipal solid waste, refuse-derived fuel and agricultural residues into synthesis gas, which is then further processed to yield green hydrogen. The approach enables energy recovery from waste streams while reducing landfill burden and supporting environmentally responsible waste management practices.
Scope of work and strategic importance
The scope of work includes the complete design, engineering, manufacturing and supply of all plant components, along with the provision of mandatory spares on an Ex-Works basis. KPI Green Energy will also undertake transportation, erection, installation, testing, pre-commissioning and commissioning of the facility. Civil works, structural steel supply and safety-related activities are included within the project framework. Following commissioning, the company will operate and maintain the plant for two years.
This development is viewed as a strategic extension of KPI Green Energy’s established renewable energy portfolio, which already covers solar, wind and hybrid power assets. By taking on this contract, the company is expanding its presence into emerging clean energy segments such as waste-to-energy and green hydrogen. The awards highlight KPI Green Energy’s capability to deliver integrated engineering and execution solutions within the evolving hydrogen market.
Plasma gasification is an advanced waste-to-energy method that uses extremely high temperatures to break down complex waste materials into simpler molecules, generating a synthesis gas rich in hydrogen. When purified and processed, this gas becomes a feedstock for green hydrogen production. The technology offers a sustainable alternative to conventional waste disposal and supports India’s push towards cleaner industrial energy systems.
By securing this NTPC project, KPI Green Energy is strengthening its role in India’s transition to a low-carbon energy mix. The initiative not only expands the company’s project pipeline but also contributes to national efforts to scale green hydrogen production and accelerate decarbonisation across sectors.
