Los Angeles has officially ended use of coal-fired electricity and is switching on what is described as the world’s largest green-hydrogen-powered electricity plant.
From next month, electricity supplied to the city will begin coming from hydrogen generated at a dedicated plant in Utah, stored underground in a salt-cavern and transported via transmission lines — a shift that supports the city’s goal of 100 % clean power by 2035.
The move by LADWP reflects accelerating momentum behind hydrogen as a viable large-scale clean energy carrier — especially for regions seeking to decarbonise legacy power systems while leveraging storage and dispatchable electricity. Energy experts say if the plant operates as intended, it could unlock a replicable model for cities worldwide aiming to exit coal.
However, the transition also comes with challenges: hydrogen production costs, infrastructure readiness, and long-term supply certainty will be critical to determine whether this becomes a blueprint or an isolated case.
