Shri Santosh Sarangi, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE)chaired the monthly Stakeholder Meeting for the National Green Hydrogen Mission at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan in New Delhi. The meeting provided a platform to assess progress and address key issues shaping India’s expanding green hydrogen ecosystem.
A major theme of the discussions centred on building the workforce required for the green hydrogen sector. Extensive deliberations took place on skilling, up-skilling and re-skilling initiatives under the Mission, aimed at creating a strong domestic talent base. The effort underscores the government’s view that human capital is as critical as infrastructure and technology in enabling a sustainable clean-energy transition.
Updates were shared on Mode 1 Green Hydrogen Production projects under the SIGHT Programme. This was followed by a candid review of challenges faced by developers including land acquisition delays grid connectivity constraints for renewable energy and financing needs for first-of-a-kind large-scale projects. Stakeholders and MNRE officials exchanged views on policy refinements and administrative simplification to ease bottlenecks and accelerate commissioning.
Finalisation of standards for Green Ammonia and Green Methanol formed another key discussion area. Establishing nationally recognised standards is considered essential for ensuring product quality enabling domestic trade and boosting the export competitiveness of these hydrogen derivatives. The meeting also reviewed procurement plans for green methanol under SIGHT intended to stimulate early market demand and create predictable signals for producers.
The session further included updates on upcoming testing facilities planned across the green hydrogen value chain. These centres will validate electrolysers fuel cells and related equipment for performance safety and reliability in line with national and international benchmarks. Their development is expected to support indigenous manufacturing and strengthen the quality assurance framework for Made in India hydrogen technologies.
The discussions reflect the government’s multi-pronged approach to building the green hydrogen ecosystem anchored in workforce readiness technology standards project execution and domestic capability-building.
