Plug Power has announced the successful installation of a 5MW GenEco electrolyser system for Cleanergy Solutions Namibia, marking a major milestone for Africa’s emerging hydrogen economy. The system has been deployed at the Hydrogen Dune site in Walvis Bay as part of a project that represents the continent’s first fully integrated commercial green hydrogen facility. Officially inaugurated in September, the plant will serve as a foundation for expanding hydrogen mobility across Namibia and neighbouring regions.
The GenEco PEM electrolyser is installed directly at the Hydrogen Dune site, which integrates renewable power production and hydrogen generation. The project includes a 5MW solar farm covering over 6.5 hectares and a 5.9 MWh battery storage system, enabling off-grid renewable hydrogen production. The hydrogen generated will support a range of transport and industrial applications including hydrogen-powered trucks, port and rail equipment and small vessels operating through the Port of Walvis Bay. The site will also supply hydrogen for dual-fuel vehicle conversions undertaken on-site.
Integrated hydrogen ecosystem for transport and industry
By combining solar power, hydrogen production and refuelling capability at a single location, the Cleanergy Solutions Namibia project creates a vertically integrated model demonstrating how clean electricity can be converted into clean molecules for practical end use. The facility supports Namibia’s broader goal of becoming a regional hub for hydrogen-based transport, maritime operations and industrial decarbonisation.
Jose Luis Crespo, President and Chief Revenue Officer of Plug, said the project shows how hydrogen is moving from “concept to commercial reality”. He noted that Plug’s electrolyser technology is helping partners build scalable, reliable hydrogen systems that can decarbonise transport and industrial activity while supporting long-term economic development.
The project comes at a time of accelerating global investment in hydrogen, with regions such as Africa, the Middle East and Australia emerging as next-generation hydrogen hubs. Namibia’s strong solar resources and supportive policy environment position the country to become a leader in renewable hydrogen production. The Cleanergy Solutions Namibia facility is expected to serve as a replicable model for future hydrogen infrastructure across the continent, enabling both domestic deployment and potential export markets.
