A major green hydrogen and e-methanol production facility has officially broken ground in Heilongjiang province, northeast China. The 4.2 billion yuan ($584 million) project, located in the coal-mining city of Shuangyashan, aims to produce 119,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually, marking a significant step in China’s low-carbon fuel ambitions.
The facility will generate green hydrogen using electricity from an integrated wind power plant. Additional hydrogen and the carbon dioxide required for methanol synthesis will be sourced from biomass gasification, reinforcing the project’s renewable and circular economy credentials.
The development is being led by a consortium comprising Jixian County authorities, state-owned shipbuilding giant CSSC, its renewable energy arm CSSC Haizhuang Wind Power, and Sichuan Hongzhan Industrial Group. While no timeline for completion or production start has been disclosed, the project represents growing momentum in China’s push for green chemical production and carbon neutrality.
Once operational, the facility is expected to contribute to reducing fossil fuel dependence in industrial chemicals while supporting regional economic growth and clean energy development in northeast China.
