India has taken a significant step forward in its green hydrogen journey, with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) approving ₹67.95 crore in funding for four strategic green hydrogen projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The investment focuses on establishing Hydrogen Valley Innovation Clusters (HVICs), which aim to integrate green hydrogen across multiple sectors, including industry, mobility, and energy systems.

The four projects—located in Pune, Kerala, Bhubaneswar, and Jodhpur—will receive individual allocations ranging from ₹14.6 crore to ₹21.36 crore. These clusters are envisioned as regional hydrogen hubs that can demonstrate the feasibility of end-to-end hydrogen ecosystems and accelerate its commercial adoption across India.

Specifically, CSIR-NCL in Pune has been allocated ₹17.03 crore, while Kerala’s ANERT will receive the largest share of ₹21.36 crore. The Indian Institute of Technology campuses in Bhubaneswar and Jodhpur will get ₹14.96 crore and ₹14.6 crore respectively. This funding is part of MNRE’s broader R&D roadmap worth ₹400 crore launched in July 2023, designed to support infrastructure, regulation, and innovative deployment of green hydrogen technologies.

The HVIC initiative aligns with India’s ambitious goal of producing 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s ₹19,744 crore, around ₹17,490 is earmarked for production-linked incentives and electrolyser manufacturing, while the rest supports research, pilot projects, and certification.

Reinforcing the momentum, Minister Prahlad Joshi stated, “Very shortly we are going to reach 75GW [of renewable energy capacity], and in two or three years I’m quite confident that we will reach 100GW.” With the recent introduction of the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme in April, which defines emissions thresholds for certified hydrogen, India is laying the foundation for a globally competitive and environmentally robust hydrogen economy.
