In a landmark development for India–Japan clean energy cooperation, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has signed an agreement with Japanese entrepreneurs to establish a Green Hydrogen Centre of Excellence in the state. The announcement follows a recent official visit by a high-level UP delegation to Japan, aimed at deepening strategic partnerships in green energy innovation.

The proposed Centre of Excellence will play a pivotal role in advancing research, innovation, and the widespread adoption of sustainable hydrogen technologies. It is expected to act as a catalyst for Uttar Pradesh’s ambitions to become a major hub for renewable energy and green transport solutions.

During their visit, the delegation explored cutting-edge technologies such as the Toyota Mirai – a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell vehicle that emits only water. This aligns with the state’s vision for a zero-emission transport policy and reinforces its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across sectors.

The delegation also visited advanced energy facilities in Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture, including the NESRAD Green Hydrogen Plant and the Suntory Hakushu Distillery, which houses a power-to-gas unit and Hydrogen Research Centre. These visits provided critical insight into best practices in hydrogen production, storage, and utilisation.

This collaboration is set to significantly boost Uttar Pradesh’s renewable energy footprint, which currently includes 3,427 MW of solar and 551 MW of hydro capacity. Integrating green hydrogen will strengthen the state’s energy security while promoting a cleaner, diversified energy portfolio.

The initiative also carries strong economic implications. The Centre is expected to attract global investment, create employment opportunities, and support the growth of a clean-tech ecosystem. By tapping into Japan’s expertise, Uttar Pradesh will gain a competitive edge in green hydrogen technology, reinforcing India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Furthermore, the partnership sets a precedent for international cooperation in energy innovation, demonstrating how global collaboration can accelerate the shift towards net zero.
