Portugal and Morocco have reaffirmed their growing strategic alliance with a renewed focus on green hydrogen collaboration, electricity interconnection, and enhanced maritime connectivity. The announcement came following high-level talks in Lisbon between Portuguese Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel and Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita.
Rangel praised the "excellent bilateral ties with the Kingdom of Morocco" and described the alliance as a "stellar cooperation model." The talks concluded with a joint statement reaffirming both nations’ shared vision for a low-carbon, interconnected future rooted in sustainable development and economic partnership.
Central to the discussions was the acceleration of green hydrogen initiatives—identified by both governments as a key pillar of their strategic cooperation. The ministers reiterated their intent to move forward with energy infrastructure projects, including an electricity interconnection initiative and stronger maritime logistics to facilitate trade and energy flows.
The meeting also celebrated two major diplomatic milestones: the 250th anniversary of the 1774 Peace and Friendship Agreement and the 30th anniversary of the 1994 Friendship, Neighborhood, and Cooperation Treaty, both of which laid the foundation for the present-day relationship.
These latest developments build on commitments made during the 14th High-Level Meeting held in Lisbon in May 2023. Both leaders emphasized the importance of translating those commitments into actionable progress, particularly in the green energy sector, where Portugal and Morocco see mutual economic and environmental benefit.
In addition to their energy collaboration, the two countries voiced strong support for their joint bid with Spain to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup—describing it as an opportunity to foster regional growth, cultural ties, and global visibility.
Rangel and Bourita concluded their meeting by pledging to maintain close coordination in multilateral forums, reflecting a broader alignment on international energy, trade, and diplomatic priorities.
