The United Kingdom’s Powerhouse Energy Group has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with B.S. Holdings Ltd (BSH) to supply ultra-pure hydrogen for the world’s first-of-its-kind Penta H2P fuel cell project in Ballymena, Northern Ireland.
The deal sets Powerhouse Energy Group as the sole hydrogen supplier with 99.999% pure hydrogen supplied at a price lower than existing green hydrogen benchmarks and the UK's CfD (Contracts for Difference) strike price. This strike price serves as a guaranteed rate paid to renewable energy generators, providing them with stable and predictable revenue.
Powerhouse's waste-to-hydrogen technology is used to produce clean fuel from non-recyclable trash. The Ballymena project will provide commercial demonstration of the circular hydrogen production, a move away from pilot ideas into real-world implementation.
It is backed by major grid and energy industry stakeholders such as Ecotricity, SONI and NIE Networks and potentially Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). Final agreements are currently being discussed, but the foundations are being set for what has the potential to be a flagship hydrogen deployment in the area.
Paul Emmitt, Chief Executive Officer of PHE said, "This is a first of its kind agreement and we are delighted to have entered into the LoI with BSH for this potential DESNZ backed project. One of the key issues holding back the increased utilisation of hydrogen has been gaining appropriate offtake agreements. This LoI has the potential to deliver that for our Ballymena project. We look forward to working with the BSH team to complete this agreement and hopefully working together in Northern Ireland."
BSH in turn will expand the partnership over its pipeline of hydrogen-based combined heat and power projects within the Mid and East Antrim Council area. Under the agreement, BSH also undertook to assist Powerhouse in securing additional commercial customers and providing priority access to future hydrogen infrastructure opportunities throughout Northern Ireland and further afield. With hydrogen at the heart of the UK's future clean energy, this deal represents a possible turning point—not only for Powerhouse and BSH, but for the implementation of scalable, affordable hydrogen in the region.
