China has marked a major breakthrough in the global clean energy transition with the inauguration of the world’s largest integrated green hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Jilin Province. Developed by the State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), the plant represents a milestone in renewable energy innovation and industrial-scale hydrogen application.

Located in western Jilin, the Da’an-based facility integrates 800 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy—700 MW from wind and 100 MW from solar—into a single production platform for green ammonia. The plant is part of a national clean hydrogen demonstration initiative and is now fully operational.

At full capacity, the facility is designed to produce 32,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and 180,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually. This transition from fossil fuels is projected to cut carbon emissions by approximately 650,000 tonnes each year and save the equivalent of 230,000 tonnes of standard coal—enough to meet the annual electricity consumption of nearly 500,000 households.

The project is also certified to international green ammonia standards, enhancing its viability for export. On the day of its inauguration, the facility shipped its first batch of green ammonia to overseas buyers, officially launching China into the global clean fuel export market.

SPIC’s subsidiary, Jilin Electric Power, has already secured international partnerships with energy giants including EDF China, PetroChina International, Japan’s Itochu, and Dutch logistics company Vopak.
