Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured land in Kandla, Gujarat to set up production units for green hydrogen and ammonia, ramping up its clean energy play as India accelerates its push toward a low-carbon economy.

The engineering giant made the announcement positioning the move as part of its broader strategy to lead in emerging energy technologies. “Electrolyser manufacturing is already underway, giving us an early edge in the green hydrogen space,” said Chairman & MD S N Subrahmanyan while addressing shareholders.

The company also received a key regulatory nod from the US Department of Energy to transfer small modular reactor (SMR) technology to India — a green light that places L&T among only three Indian firms eligible for the next wave of nuclear commercialisation. “Our SMR journey is formally underway,” Subrahmanyan said.

The Kandla site will house facilities for green hydrogen and ammonia production, with L&T now capable of executing global EPC projects in green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol. The firm recently floated a subsidiary L&T Green Energy Kandla Pvt Ltd to steer its hydrogen initiatives.

The government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission is backing such projects as it bets on hydrogen to decarbonise transport and industry. L&T’s long-term ambition is to build proprietary technology, manufacture core equipment and deliver cost-efficient solutions for emerging markets. L&T is actively diversifying its green energy portfolio by pursuing licenses for fuel cells and batteries. The Front-End Engineering and Design studies are ongoing and the company is in discussions with domestic and international buyers for off-take agreements. With planned expansions along India’s east and west coasts, L&T is cementing its position as a major player in the global green energy transition.
