In a landmark move toward sustainable transport, NTPC Limited has officially handed over five hydrogen fuel cell buses to the State Industrial Development Corporation (SIDCO) at its Green Hydrogen Mobility Station in Palam, Leh. This marks India’s first commercial deployment of hydrogen powered buses and the world’s highest-altitude green hydrogen mobility initiative.
The handover ceremony was attended by Bhupesh Chaudhary, Administrative Secretary of the Transport Department, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Leh and senior representatives from NTPC, SIDCO and other local bodies. Following the flag-off, Chaudhary inspected NTPC’s Green Hydrogen Plant, reviewing its hydrogen production, storage and dispensing systems.
Praising NTPC's innovation in tackling Ladakh’s unique geographical challenges, Chaudhary underscored the significance of the initiative in aligning with the Union Territory administration’s goal of achieving a carbon-neutral Ladakh.
The rollout of hydrogen fuel cell buses is part of NTPC’s broader commitment to green energy, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and enabling clean mobility in remote, environmentally sensitive regions.
NTPC’S other flagship projects include Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub in Andhra Pradesh, a joint venture with NREDCAP, which will span 1,600 acres and feature 20 GW of renewable energy capacity to produce 1,500 tonnes per day of green hydrogen and 7,500 tonnes per day of derivatives like green methanol, green urea and sustainable aviation fuel—primarily targeting the export market and representing an investment of over ₹1,85,000 crore. The company is also developing a 25 GW renewable energy and green hydrogen hub in Rajasthan and has signed agreements for similar projects in Maharashtra, aiming for up to 5 GW of renewables and 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
