In a move that strengthens India’s transition toward clean energy, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bengaluru-based Ohmium International to co-develop green hydrogen-powered solutions for both mobility and stationary applications. The partnership underscores Toyota’s commitment to carbon neutrality and supports National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The collaboration combines Ohmium’s modular and cost-effective Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer technology with Toyota’s globally proven fuel cell systems. Together, the companies aim to develop integrated hydrogen-based power solutions such as microgrids, which can be used in off-grid locations and data centers. As part of the agreement, TKM will provide fuel cell modules and system integration expertise, while Ohmium will lead the design, development and testing of prototype solutions.
India has set ambitious goals to achieve energy independence by 2047 and net zero emissions by 2070. Green hydrogen, with its potential to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors and store renewable energy is a key pillar in this strategy. TKM has been a proactive player in this space—having launched the Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) pilot with iCAT in 2022 and entered an MoU with Ashok Leyland to supply fuel cell modules for commercial vehicles earlier this year.
Government officials lauded the collaboration. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari described hydrogen as “the fuel of the future” and praised Toyota and Ohmium for their role in advancing India’s self-reliance and clean energy goals. Minister Shripad Yesso Naik and Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa also emphasized the importance of industry-led innovation in building a domestic green hydrogen ecosystem.
TKM Vice Chairperson Manasi Tata said the initiative goes beyond clean mobility by exploring hydrogen’s diverse applications. Swapnesh Maru, TKM’s Deputy Managing Director, added that this collaboration aligns with Toyota’s multi-pathway strategy to sustainability. With manufacturing operations in India and a 2 GW global hydrogen pipeline, Ohmium’s partnership with TKM signals a significant step in localizing hydrogen innovation and building a cleaner, energy-secure future for India.
