The state is leveraging its rich hydropower potential through projects like Tehri, Koteshwar and Vishnugad, but is now also expanding its focus to geothermal energy and solar-based self-employment schemes. These diversified efforts mark a deliberate shift from legacy energy infrastructure toward a future-ready, low-carbon ecosystem, reported Times of India.
Significantly, green hydrogen is emerging as a promising area of interest for the state, given its geographic advantage and renewable resource base. As India ramps up its National Green Hydrogen Mission, states like Uttarakhand which is rich in hydropower and increasingly solar-ready are expected to play a catalytic role in decentralized green hydrogen production.
While national players such as ONGC continue to drive exploration and production in oil and gas, the broader energy narrative is changing. The country’s long-term energy security now rests not only on expanding reserves or pipelines, but also on reducing dependency through clean fuels and resilient local ecosystems.
Initiatives such as the expansion of gas infrastructure under ‘One Nation, One Grid’ and the setting up of bio CNG plants point to a gradual but steady diversification of India’s energy basket. Programs like Ujjwala may have addressed immediate household needs, but the next frontier lies in scaling industrial decarbonization where green hydrogen is poised to be pivotal.
For Uttarakhand, the transition is also an opportunity. With policy momentum behind green energy and growing interest in hydrogen, the state is uniquely positioned to attract investment, generate employment and support India’s goal of becoming a net-zero economy by 2070.
