BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) has inaugurated a new production facility in Budenheim, Germany, to manufacture catalyst coated membranes for green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.
BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) has opened a state-of-the-art production facility for green hydrogen and fuel cell components in Budenheim, Germany, near Frankfurt. The new facility was developed in partnership with Trigona Fuel Cell Components GmbH and Grundstücksverwaltung Rheinufer GmbH & Co. KG, marking a significant milestone in ECMS’s commitment to advancing the hydrogen economy.
The investment represents a major step for ECMS in supporting the development of circular solutions that improve performance and reduce costs for proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis and fuel cells. The Budenheim site produces low-PGM-loaded catalyst coated membranes (CCMs) — a key functional component for PEM water electrolysis stacks. The facility has gigawatt-scale production capacity for commercial supply of these new CCMs, enabling ECMS to serve the global PEM electrolyser market.
ECMS’s hydrogen business operates across Europe, North America and Asia, providing a global footprint to support the transition to renewable energy systems. As the renewable ecosystem expands, green hydrogen production from water electrolysis is expected to become an essential pillar in decarbonising the hydrogen value chain and balancing surplus green energy, contributing directly to the global energy transition.
Saeed Alerasool, Senior Vice President of Research, Development and Application for ECMS, added: “It’s great to see our precious metal, catalysis and coating competencies come to life in Budenheim. We continue to leverage our expertise to develop the next generation of high-performance products at a reduced cost to meet industry needs and support the global energy transition.”
The facility, located on an industrial site within the Rhein-Main Metropolitan region, positions ECMS at the heart of Europe’s growing clean energy ecosystem, enhancing its capacity to deliver sustainable, high-efficiency hydrogen technologies to international markets.
