The Government of India has launched a ₹100-crore call-for-proposals to support pilot projects that produce green hydrogen from biomass and waste materials, marking a key move under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM).

The announcement was made during the 3rd International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH 2025). The scheme, to be implemented through the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), is open to research institutions, start‑ups and industrial players developing scalable hydrogen production technologies from alternative feedstocks.

This initiative expands the feedstock base for green hydrogen, shifting beyond conventional renewable electricity to include agricultural residues, forestry waste and other biomass streams. It is designed to accelerate commercial deployment, drive decarbonisation of hard‑to‑abate sectors and reduce India’s dependence on fossil‑fuel imports.

By supporting innovation in biomass‑to‑hydrogen technologies, the scheme also aims to strengthen the domestic hydrogen value chain, stimulate new jobs and position India as a producer and exporter of low‑carbon fuels. The new pilot programme signals a shift from demonstration projects to full‑scale deployment under the NGHM.
