JSW Energy has commissioned its first green hydrogen plant, marking a major milestone in India’s clean energy transition. In an exchange filing, the company announced that the new facility is India’s largest green hydrogen manufacturing plant, located in Vijaynagar, Karnataka.
The plant will produce 3,800 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum and supply it to the adjacent JSW Steel facility for use in steel production. Additionally, the facility will generate 30,000 tonnes per annum of oxygen, which will also be supplied to the JSW Energy plant at the same site. Both facilities are part of the JSW Group’s integrated industrial complex in Vijaynagar.
According to JSW Energy, this project forms part of its 6,800 tonnes per annum allocation under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme administered by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).
“The project is a key milestone in our country’s clean energy journey and reflects our unwavering commitment to support India’s transition toward a low-carbon economy and decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as steel,” said Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy.
As part of its long-term hydrogen roadmap, JSW Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with JSW Steel to progressively supply between 85,000 and 90,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum and 720,000 tonnes of green oxygen per annum by 2030. The agreement highlights the Group’s strategy to decarbonise its steelmaking operations and strengthen India’s domestic green hydrogen supply chain.
JSW Energy’s increased focus on hydrogen production also reflects rising global pressure for cleaner steel, particularly from markets such as the European Union, which are prioritising low-carbon imports. The commissioning supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to produce 5 million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen by 2030.
Currently, JSW Energy has a locked-in generation capacity of 30.5 GW, including 13.3 GW operational, 12.5 GW under construction, and 29.4 GWh of energy storage capacity, comprising 26.4 GWh of hydro pumped storage and 3 GWh of battery storage systems.
The commissioning of the Vijaynagar plant positions JSW Energy at the forefront of India’s industrial decarbonisation efforts, advancing the country’s journey toward a sustainable, hydrogen-driven future.
