OMV AG and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar) have signed a binding agreement to establish a joint venture for a 140-megawatt (MW) green hydrogen facility currently under construction in Bruck an der Leitha, Lower Austria. The project, expected to start production in 2027, will produce up to 23,000 metric tonnes of hydrogen per annum (MMtpa) and will be the largest renewable hydrogen plant in Austria and Southeastern Europe, as well as among the top five in Europe, according to OMV.

The plant will employ electrolysis technology to split water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable power sources, including wind, solar and hydro energy. This integrated clean power approach is designed to ensure sustainable hydrogen generation and support Austria’s long-term decarbonisation goals.

Under the agreement, OMV will hold a 51 per cent stake in the joint venture, while Masdar will own the remaining 49 per cent. The formation of the joint venture is expected to be completed by early 2026, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals.

In a joint statement, the companies said, “The partnership combines OMV’s strategic leadership under its integrated Fuels and Chemicals business with Masdar’s commercial, financial and technical expertise in developing and operating clean energy projects worldwide.”

OMV, which already operates a 10 MW electrolyser plant for green hydrogen in Schwechat, will procure renewable electricity for production and will own the hydrogen produced at the new site. The hydrogen will partly fuel OMV’s Schwechat refinery, reducing its carbon emissions by up to 150,000 tonnes per annum, which equates to around 10 per cent of the refinery’s production-related emissions.
