The Government of Ontario has announced a new round of its Hydrogen Innovation Fund (HIF), backed by an investment of $30 million. This latest funding doubles the amount allocated in the previous round and is aimed at supporting projects that advance hydrogen development while bolstering Ontario’s clean energy and economic growth objectives. The initiative will also promote projects led by Canadian companies to enhance energy security and industrial development across the province. The fund is administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).
The expanded HIF will operate through two funding streams. The first stream will support projects that integrate low-carbon hydrogen into Ontario’s electricity grid, enabling greater use of renewable energy and improving grid resilience. The second stream will promote hydrogen adoption across multiple sectors, including transportation, manufacturing and heavy industry. This will encompass the development of hydrogen hubs, the creation of linkages between hydrogen producers and consumers, and the transition of existing users to hydrogen produced within Ontario. Applications for both streams will close on 11 February 2026.
According to the provincial government, the initiative aims to promote cross-sectoral hydrogen applications while strengthening Ontario’s industrial base and enhancing economic competitiveness. The fund represents a key step in the province’s efforts to establish itself as a leader in low-carbon hydrogen technologies and support the energy transition through collaborative innovation.
Ontario’s Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy, launched in 2022, has already supported 15 hydrogen projects through $13.8 million in funding during the 2023 round of the Hydrogen Innovation Fund. The newly expanded programme builds on that foundation to encourage a wider range of pilot and demonstration projects, as well as the deployment of commercial-scale hydrogen applications.
