Protium, one of the UK’s leading green hydrogen energy companies, has announced the start of construction on its second hydrogen production facility in South Wales. The new site, known as Pioneer 2, represents a major step in Protium’s mission to deliver reliable, scalable green hydrogen energy across the United Kingdom.

The development builds on the success of Pioneer 1, the company’s first operational hydrogen site, also located in South Wales. Together, the two facilities form the foundation of Protium’s growing network of green hydrogen assets, designed to decarbonise the UK’s hardest-to-electrify sectors — including heavy transport, logistics, off-grid power and energy-intensive industries.

Pioneer 2 will be one of the largest containerised Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) systems in the UK. Once operational, the facility will produce up to one tonne of green hydrogen per day, supporting a wide range of industrial and mobility applications.

The system will also be among the first in the UK to participate in grid balancing, following Protium’s successful collaboration with Flexitricity. The company previously became the first green hydrogen asset to be awarded support under the UK Government’s capacity market auction process, demonstrating its ability to contribute to energy stability while advancing decarbonisation goals.

The new facility will support off-grid power and transport applications, and continue Protium’s tradition of enabling the scale-up of early-stage and innovative hydrogen uses, including autonomous hydrogen vehicles, e-fuel production and research and development facilities.

By providing access to clean hydrogen beyond the national grid, Protium aims to decarbonise remote operations, construction sites and temporary logistics hubs — areas often underserved by conventional energy infrastructure but critical to achieving the UK’s net-zero objectives.

With Pioneer 2, Protium reinforces its position at the forefront of the UK’s hydrogen transition, expanding domestic production capacity and supporting the development of a resilient, low-carbon energy ecosystem.
