Tripura is positioning itself as a leader in renewable energy in the North East with plans to develop a Hydrogen Valley Hub for blending and exporting green hydrogen, announced Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath at the Regional Workshop on Renewable Energy in Guwahati.

Highlighting the state’s achievements in renewable-energy deployment, the minister said Tripura has secured the first position among North Eastern states in implementing the PM-KUSUM Scheme.

Tripura has installed 48.53 MW of green-energy systems to date with a target of 500 MW by 2030. Initiatives under schemes such as PM-KUSUM, PM-DevINE, PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, Grameen Baazar Alok Jyoti Prakalpa and solar and bio-gas micro-grids have boosted rural energy access. Examples include distribution of 3 lakh study lamps, installation of solar street lights in over 1,000 village markets, deployment of 6,051 solar irrigation pumps and electrification of 289 remote habitations.

The minister also underscored the need for skilled manpower to support the installation of 813.47 MW of renewable-energy capacity, estimating that 4,234 employment opportunities could be generated by 2030. He further said that Tripura has potential for small hydro power projects, for which it may seek technical and financial assistance from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

“Renewable-energy initiatives are not only addressing energy demand but also creating socio-economic opportunities for rural and poor communities. We must endorse the use of clean energy in our daily lives,” Nath said.

Officials present at the workshop included Power Secretary Abhishek Singh and TREDA Director-General (In-Charge) Debabrata Sukla Das.

Tripura’s blueprint for a green-hydrogen hub — alongside its strong rural-energy push — highlights its ambition to integrate renewable power, export potential and socio-economic development in the clean-energy era.
