The Kerala government has positioned Vizhinjam, home to the state’s new international port, as a major component of its strategy to advance green hydrogen development. As part of its clean energy roadmap, the power department has confirmed that land in the coastal region will be allocated to support the establishment of green hydrogen infrastructure, including future bunkering and production facilities.
In an order issued on 10 November, the power department stated that 50–60 acres of land will be identified near Vizhinjam Port for the development of facilities related to bunkering green methanol and green ammonia. The land will be finalised in consultation with the Revenue Department. The Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (ANERT) has also been authorised to prepare detailed project report proposals for green hydrogen hubs and submit them to the Energy Corporation of India.
Kerala advances Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster plans
Kerala is simultaneously advancing plans to create a regional green hydrogen ecosystem centred around Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, under the Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster (HVIC) initiative. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) approved the HVIC for Kerala in July 2025. A hydrogen valley is defined as a geographical region where hydrogen production, storage, distribution and utilisation are integrated through coordinated pilot and demonstration projects.
The proposed HVIC in Kerala will include green hydrogen refuelling stations in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, along with a series of pilot and demonstration initiatives. Supporting infrastructure will include electrolyser banks for green hydrogen production, as well as hydrogen compression and storage systems. These developments aim to build a connected hydrogen ecosystem that supports Kerala’s long-term energy transition.
The choice of Vizhinjam reflects the State’s intention to integrate green hydrogen into maritime operations and port-linked industries. With its strategic location and deep-water port, Vizhinjam is expected to serve as a vital site for green hydrogen-based bunkering and future export-oriented applications.
