ACME has announced plans to establish a 1.2 million tonnes per annum sponge iron plant in India that will use green hydrogen in its production process. The initiative marks a significant step towards decarbonising India’s steel and iron sectors, which are among the most carbon-intensive industries in the country.

According to the company, the proposed facility will employ green hydrogen-based direct reduction technology to replace conventional fossil fuel-based processes. This approach aims to drastically reduce carbon emissions while aligning with India’s broader climate and industrial decarbonisation goals.

Traditional sponge iron manufacturing relies heavily on coal or natural gas, both of which contribute substantially to greenhouse gas emissions. By transitioning to hydrogen, ACME seeks to demonstrate a scalable, cleaner alternative that supports sustainable industrial development. The move reflects growing momentum among Indian industrial players to integrate renewable energy and green hydrogen into core manufacturing operations.

The new facility is expected to create a benchmark for low-carbon steel production in the country, complementing the government’s focus on hydrogen-based industrial transformation under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
