French hydrogen start-up Gen-Hy has achieved record-breaking test results in China for its Gen-AEM® membrane technology, marking a major milestone in green hydrogen innovation. The company’s AEM (anion exchange membrane) electrolysers, which operate without any rare materials, demonstrated exceptional performance during independent testing at the Shandong Hydrogen Carrier Technology Development Company laboratory, confirming Gen-Hy’s technological leadership and opening doors for expansion in the Asian markets.

The tests yielded impressive results, with the Gen-AEM® membrane achieving a voltage of 1.58 V at a current density of 0.3 A/cm² and an efficiency of 93.7%. At 0.7 A/cm² and 1.77 V, the efficiency reached 83.6%, and at 1 A/cm² and 1.89 V, the efficiency stood at 78.3%. These results represent unprecedented performance for AEM electrolysers that do not rely on precious or rare materials, validating Gen-Hy’s claim of high-efficiency, cost-effective hydrogen production.

In addition to its outstanding performance, the tests confirmed that the Gen-AEM® membrane recorded the lowest hydrogen permeability (cross-over) values ever measured under all operating conditions. This superior gas separation capability enhances safety and efficiency, making the technology highly attractive for large-scale deployment in the green hydrogen sector.

Gen-Hy is currently constructing a manufacturing facility in Allenjoie (Doubs), France, to produce AEM membranes and electrolysers. The company aims to begin full-scale production and commercialisation in early 2026. The breakthrough test results in China have already drawn strong interest from several regional renewable energy companies involved in wind and solar power, seeking to integrate Gen-Hy’s AEM technology into their clean energy systems.

By combining cutting-edge innovation with sustainable design, Gen-Hy is positioning itself as a key player in the global hydrogen economy. Its rare-material-free technology not only addresses critical supply chain vulnerabilities but also aligns with the broader global push for affordable, scalable, and environmentally responsible hydrogen solutions.
