The Government of India has made it mandatory for importers of specific products used exclusively in solar and wind energy projects to register on the Renewable Energy Equipment Import Monitoring System (REEIMS). The directive, issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), is aimed at improving oversight of renewable energy equipment imports and will come into effect on November 1.

According to the DGFT notification, the new registration requirement applies to items such as toughened (tempered) safety glass and photosensitive semiconductor devices, including photovoltaic cells, which are critical components in solar energy projects. Importers of these products must register their shipments in advance through REEIMS—at least two days before dispatch for air cargo, and five days in advance for sea or land route consignments. The policy will cover imports arriving through all modes of transport, including air, sea, and land.

A similar registration condition will also apply to products used in wind-operated electricity generation. The list includes towers, bearing housings, gears, and gearing systems that form essential components of wind power infrastructure. The DGFT further stated that the REEIMS will incorporate a mechanism requiring importers to declare the intended end-use of the imported components.

The move is designed to enhance monitoring, ensure traceability, and promote transparency in the import of renewable energy components—an essential step in supporting India’s push toward clean energy self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
