The Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) and the Indian Federation of Green Energy (IFGE) have jointly called on the Government of India to formulate a National Ethanol Mobility Roadmap. Their appeal includes clearly defined goals beyond the current E-20 blending target, rationalisation of GST rates on flex-fuel and smart hybrid vehicles, and consumer incentives analogous to the FAME scheme for electric vehicles.

They argue that the sugar industry has already ramped up capacity—producing 1,776 crore litres of ethanol against the OMCs’ requirement of 1,050 crore litres—and that policy clarity is needed to avoid underutilised investments and platform stagnation.

Deepak Ballani, Director General of ISMA, emphasised that blending targets beyond 20 percent require phased, time-bound milestones, standardisation of vehicle adaptation norms, and encouragement for advanced biofuels like 2G/3G ethanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Dr Pramod Chaudhari, President of IFGE, underscored that sustaining the ethanol revolution over the long term will demand roadmap-driven clarity, stable incentives, and stronger R&D support.
