Latin America has achieved a clean-energy milestone with the unveiling of its first vessel powered entirely by green hydrogen. The boat was presented on the Itaipu reservoir in Foz do Iguacu, located on the Parana River, marking a significant advancement in sustainable transportation technology for the region.

Constructed with an aluminium hull, the craft measures 9.5 metres in length and 3 metres in width. It operates without noise or harmful emissions, producing only pure water as its by-product. The vessel represents a breakthrough in zero-emission mobility, combining efficiency and environmental responsibility.

The boat will be officially launched in Belem during the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), scheduled to take place from November 10 to 21. The event will host government representatives, environmental organisations, and civil society groups from around the world to discuss global climate strategies and sustainable innovation.

Initially, the green hydrogen-powered vessel will be used for collecting solid waste on the inhabited islands surrounding Belem. Beyond its immediate environmental function, the project aims to promote scientific, social, and technological development across the Amazon region, serving as a model for green innovation in maritime transport.

The initiative aligns with Brazil’s growing focus on renewable energy and sustainability. Recently, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced a landmark investment of USD 1 billion in the newly established Tropical Forests Forever Facility, reinforcing the country’s leadership role in climate action and ecosystem preservation.

By integrating green hydrogen technology into practical, community-oriented applications, this project underscores Latin America’s commitment to sustainable development. It highlights how clean energy solutions can drive both environmental stewardship and regional innovation, setting an important precedent for future maritime and industrial decarbonisation efforts.
