Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has announced the launch of a study to develop a master plan for optimizing facilities and logistics related to the export of green hydrogen and green ammonia from India. The project, initiated under Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s (METI) FY2023 Global South Future-Oriented Co-Creation supplementary programme, is being undertaken in partnership with India-based Hygenco Green Energies.
India is actively promoting the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia as part of its efforts to establish a strong export-oriented industry. With Japan and Southeast Asian nations incorporating these fuels into their medium- and long-term decarbonisation strategies, India is being positioned as a promising supply hub for the region.
As part of the study, MHI will apply its technical expertise to design models for both the production and utilisation of green hydrogen and green ammonia under real-world conditions, taking into account environmental factors as well as constraints impacting transport and logistics. Earlier in August, MHI signed an agreement with Hygenco to access critical data related to green ammonia production in India, which will form the basis of its assessments.
The study will also focus on integrating production and usage models to identify optimal facilities that can operate under economically viable conditions. The findings will support the formulation of a master plan aimed at accelerating the deployment of carbon-neutral fuels across countries such as India and Singapore. Based on simulation results, MHI and its partners intend to provide proposals to governments worldwide on key measures required to encourage the adoption of these fuels and to strengthen international cooperation in advancing decarbonisation initiatives.
MHI has emphasised that this project is aligned with its broader strategy to expand its energy transition business and achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. Through this collaboration with Hygenco, the company aims to contribute to the creation of a sustainable value chain for carbon-neutral fuels while supporting both Japanese and global stakeholders in meeting their decarbonisation targets.
