OMV has taken a significant step towards a climate-neutral energy future by laying the foundation stone for one of Europe’s largest electrolysis plants for green hydrogen. The 140 MW plant, located in Bruck an der Leitha, is scheduled to commence operations by the end of 2027. Once operational, the facility will produce up to 23,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually using renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, and hydropower, contributing substantially to reducing OMV’s carbon emissions.
The plant will support local green hydrogen production, enhancing the sustainability of production processes, fuel, and chemical products at OMV’s Schwechat refinery. The company anticipates that this initiative will reduce up to 150,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, equating to approximately 10 percent of the refinery’s current direct, production-related emissions.
The project includes the construction of a 22-kilometre hydrogen pipeline connecting the electrolysis plant in Bruck an der Leitha to the Schwechat refinery. The operating and building permits for the project have already been granted.
The European Hydrogen Bank has assessed the project positively for funding, with the funding agreement currently being finalised in collaboration with Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH (aws), the national processing office for the European Hydrogen Bank’s programme. A contract with the Austrian Hydrogen Bank is expected to be signed by the end of 2025.
This project reinforces OMV’s leadership in green hydrogen production within the European refinery sector. OMV already operates a 10 MW electrolyser in Austria, and the upcoming 140 MW facility in Bruck an der Leitha will be the largest in Austria, South-Eastern Europe, and one of the five largest in Europe.
