The Government of India has officially recognised three major ports — Deendayal Port Authority (Gujarat), V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (Tamil Nadu), and Paradip Port Authority (Odisha) — as Green Hydrogen Hubs under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM).

Announcing the decision, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, stated that ports will play a pivotal role in India’s transition toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. “Ports are important nodes in the transition towards net zero by 2070,” the minister said, underscoring their strategic importance in enabling the shift to cleaner energy systems.

The recognition of these ports as hydrogen hubs aligns with the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to make India a global leader in the production, utilisation, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. These designated hubs will serve as key nodes for green hydrogen production, storage, and distribution, facilitating industrial adoption and export-oriented growth.

The Mission has adopted a cluster-based development model to improve project feasibility and scalability. According to the Ministry, this model enhances early-stage project viability, supports infrastructure convergence, and promotes economies of scale across identified regions. It is also designed to foster synergies between industrial clusters, transport corridors, and renewable energy zones to accelerate hydrogen ecosystem development.

By designating these strategic port locations, the government seeks to catalyse public and private investment in hydrogen infrastructure while creating a strong foundation for India’s clean energy value chain. The initiative is expected to attract major industrial participation, promote green technology innovation, and contribute significantly to India’s long-term decarbonisation goals.

This move marks a critical step forward in India’s broader strategy to integrate green hydrogen into its energy mix, leveraging the country’s maritime assets to drive industrial transformation and support sustainable economic growth.
