HY2B Wasserstoff GmbH has achieved a major milestone in Europe’s green hydrogen sector, becoming officially certified as both a producer and trader of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) hydrogen under the CertifHy EU certification system. The certification, received on September 9, 2025, applies to the company’s electrolyser at the hydrogen centre in Pfeffenhausen, Bavaria, which is now authorised to generate and deliver hydrogen that fully complies with the European Union’s strict sustainability standards.

With this development, HY2B can immediately supply 100% green hydrogen, marking a critical step towards strengthening the role of renewable hydrogen in Europe’s decarbonisation efforts. The electrolyser in Pfeffenhausen is capable of producing hydrogen with exceptionally low carbon emissions—less than 0.1 grams of CO₂ per megajoule. Compared to the reference value for fossil fuels, set at 94 g CO₂/MJ, HY2B’s RFNBO hydrogen delivers almost 99.9% savings in greenhouse gas emissions.

The certification is expected to boost market confidence in RFNBO hydrogen, which is increasingly seen as central to achieving the European Union’s renewable energy targets and meeting climate commitments under the Fit for 55 package. RFNBO-certified hydrogen also plays an important role in sectors such as steelmaking, aviation, shipping, and heavy industry, where alternatives for deep decarbonisation remain limited.

In addition to certification, HY2B has launched grid-serving operations, positioning its facility as not just a hydrogen production site but also an asset that can contribute to energy stability. The company has started providing control reserve capacity, helping to balance fluctuations in Germany’s electricity grid by adjusting electrolyser operations in line with renewable power availability. This dual role—supporting the energy system while producing zero-carbon fuel—demonstrates how hydrogen plants can integrate with wider renewable infrastructure.

Industry observers say HY2B’s achievement highlights the growing maturity of Europe’s hydrogen sector. By meeting the stringent criteria of the CertifHy EU RFNBO certification system, the company has set a benchmark for other hydrogen developers in the region.

As Europe accelerates its push towards climate neutrality by 2050, certified hydrogen producers like HY2B are expected to play a leading role in scaling supply, creating green jobs, and supporting industrial decarbonisation.
