Viridien, an advanced technology, digital and Earth data company, and Mantle8, a French geoscience company specialising in natural hydrogen exploration, have announced a strategic partnership designed to accelerate the pace of hydrogen exploration across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). This collaboration is supported by Viridien making a strategic investment in Mantle8, signalling strong confidence in the role natural hydrogen could play in the global energy transition.

The partnership grants Mantle8 access to GeoVerse, Viridien’s world-leading geological database. With GeoVerse, Mantle8 will have the ability to analyse decades of subsurface geological and geophysical data at scale, allowing for a more informed approach to identifying areas where natural hydrogen could be actively generated. This access is expected to significantly shorten exploration timelines and lower risks compared to traditional prospecting methods.

In addition, Mantle8 has selected Sercel, Viridien’s Sensing & Monitoring business, to supply WiNG DFU-3C passive seismic sensors. These advanced sensors are capable of imaging subsurface hydrogen-generating systems with greater precision and efficiency, providing real-time insights that improve the accuracy of exploration campaigns. By deploying such cutting-edge technology, Mantle8 aims to establish itself as a frontrunner in natural hydrogen discovery and development.

The announcement comes at a critical time for Europe and the broader EMEA region. As the push for clean energy intensifies, natural hydrogen is gaining recognition as a potentially scalable and low-cost energy source that complements renewable power and green hydrogen production. Analysts suggest that Europe may hold extensive natural hydrogen reserves, but a combination of technological limitations and lack of subsurface data has slowed efforts to fully assess the resource potential. This partnership seeks to address those barriers head-on.

According to Viridien, combining its unparalleled subsurface data with Sercel’s monitoring technologies will allow Mantle8 to accelerate prospect generation, refine its scanning processes and pinpoint high-potential hydrogen zones with unprecedented accuracy. The goal is to move beyond theory into real-world testing and commercial viability, paving the way for natural hydrogen to emerge as a practical contributor to the energy mix.

Mantle8 has emphasised that this collaboration not only enhances its exploration capabilities but also creates opportunities for knowledge transfer and technology validation across different geographies. With hydrogen positioned as a cornerstone of the global decarbonisation strategy, natural hydrogen—if proven commercially viable—could offer a game-changing addition to the clean energy toolkit, reducing dependency on fossil fuels and supporting energy security.

The partnership between Viridien and Mantle8 thus represents a significant step in unlocking the natural hydrogen potential of EMEA. By combining investment, data access, and innovative seismic technology, the two companies are positioning themselves at the forefront of one of the most promising yet underexplored clean energy frontiers.
