India and the Netherlands have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing clean energy by strengthening cooperation in green hydrogen technologies. A stakeholder workshop and matchmaking session brought together the Netherlands’ Hydrogen Innovation Mission and India’s Hydrogen Valley Innovation Clusters to explore opportunities for collaboration in research, technology development, and knowledge exchange.

The event, organised by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, served as a platform for high-level discussions on how the two countries can accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen. Distinguished delegates from both sides participated in the dialogue, deliberating on ways to leverage bilateral cooperation to address climate change while fostering sustainable growth.

The discussions underscored the importance of a “triple helix” model of collaboration—integrating government, industry, and academia—to advance innovation in the hydrogen sector. This model is already central to India’s green hydrogen roadmap under the National Green Hydrogen Mission and resonates with the Netherlands’ national strategy, which places green hydrogen as a key pillar for achieving carbon neutrality.

Speaking at the workshop, Ms Marisa Gerards, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to India, lauded India’s strong political will and leadership in advancing the energy transition. She highlighted that for the Netherlands, green hydrogen is not just a technology but an integral part of its long-term strategy to secure sustainable energy systems. Ambassador Gerards further stressed the value of people-to-people connections, fellowship programmes, and joint pilot projects as tools to nurture young talent and deepen long-term bilateral collaboration.

India, with its abundant renewable energy potential and ambitious green hydrogen mission, is emerging as a crucial partner for countries looking to expand clean energy cooperation. The Netherlands, on the other hand, has positioned itself as a leader in hydrogen innovation, with robust policies and advanced research initiatives. Together, the two nations bring complementary strengths to the table—India’s scale and renewable energy resources, paired with Dutch expertise in technology and innovation.

The workshop also highlighted the role of joint research and development in driving breakthroughs that can reduce costs, improve efficiency, and accelerate commercial deployment of hydrogen technologies. Opportunities for collaboration include electrolysers, hydrogen storage and transport, and the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industries.
