Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), Indonesia’s leading geothermal operator, has started construction of a green hydrogen pilot facility at its Ulubelu site, targeting production of 100kg per day.

The project will deploy anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis technology, which offers efficiency rates between 82% and 88%. While the electrolyser supplier and commissioning timeline remain undisclosed, PGE said the pilot marks an important step in integrating geothermal energy with hydrogen production.

By harnessing geothermal baseload power, the project aims to create value beyond traditional electricity sales. PGE also plans to expand into green ammonia and green methanol production, diversifying revenue streams and positioning geothermal as the backbone of Indonesia’s clean energy supply chain.

The pilot aligns with Indonesia’s ambition to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2060, with green hydrogen, carbon capture, and renewables forming key pillars of the country’s strategy. In 2024, the government announced plans to invest more than USD 25 billion into its hydrogen sector.
