German energy major RWE has reserved capacity for 150MW of electrolysers from UK-based ITM Power, marking another step in its green hydrogen strategy. The reservation covers 30 of ITM’s 5MW Neptune containerised systems, with call-offs expected by 2027 when manufacturing could begin.
The deal follows ITM’s ongoing supply of 200MW of electrolysers to RWE’s flagship 300MW GetH2 Nukleus project in Lingen, Germany. However, the company has not disclosed where the newly reserved Neptune systems will be deployed. With supply for GetH2 already secured, industry observers suggest the units could be designated for other large-scale projects, such as the 100MW HyTechHafen development in Rostock, Germany, or the 300–500MW offshore H2opZee initiative in the Netherlands.
“This additional 150MW capacity reservation underlines RWE’s confidence in our technology and delivery capability,” said ITM Power CEO Dennis Schulz.
The agreement highlights RWE’s growing green hydrogen portfolio, with several projects over 100MW under development across Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. It also underscores ITM’s strengthening commercial momentum after a turnaround in its financial performance.
In its FY2025 results, ITM reported record revenues and a sharp rise in its order backlog, which reached £145.1 million ($197 million) compared to £79.7 million ($108.5 million) a year earlier. Notably, 60% of the backlog now consists of profitable contracts, in contrast to a pipeline dominated by loss-making legacy deals in the previous year.
For ITM, the RWE reservation reflects growing market confidence in its Neptune technology and its ability to deliver at scale. For RWE, it signals continued ambition to secure technology capacity early as competition intensifies across Europe’s green hydrogen sector.
